Make The Most Of Your Plumbing Projects

When you have to do your own plumbing jobs, you may not know which tools, equipment, regulations or instructions you may need to get started. These tips will give you the information you need to be a better plumber!

If a plunger is ineffective, you might be able to do the trick with a bucket of warm water. Once the water level gets low again, repeat the process.

Every so often, inspect the floor around your toilet and see if it has gone soft. Another great way to check is to actually sit on the toilet and move in a rocking motion, going back and forth from right to left to see how much give you feel. You could save yourself money but noticing that problem sooner, rather than later.

Do not put any oil, fat, or greasy foods or products in your sink. When these oils cool, they become hard and create clogs. Especially if you operate a garbage disposal, the fat causes blades to be less efficient. Be sure to get rid of oil products away from your sink.

Pour baking soda and vinegar down your bathtub drain every month. Cover with a rag or plug, as a chemical reaction will occur in the pipes. After giving the mixture time to work, flush it out by running boiling water through the drain. Doing this periodically should keep your pipes free of hair and soap scum.

If you operate the disposal on your sink, run plenty of cool water. Cold water helps the blades stay sharp and keeps the disposal running smoothly. If you use hot water it will liquefy the grease, allowing it to accumulate in your drain causing your pipes to clog.

Kitchen Sink

An incorrectly installed hose from the kitchen sink to the dishwasher can cause unwanted water to drain into the dishwasher. The hose leading from the kitchen sink to the dishwasher must lead uphill and then back downhill in order to prevent mixing of water from both devices.

Clean the lint trap in your dryer. By keeping it clean, you can prevent fires and other problems. Be sure you inspect your lint trap for tears or holes that could mean lint is going into your pipes, which can cause clogs and issues.

Frozen pipes can cause you to incur expensive plumbing repair bills. They can generally be prevented, though. If you have any pipes outside, have them properly insulated. When wintertime comes, disconnect and drain your hoses and shut off outside faucets. This can save some serious money on pipe repairs over time.

If you get grout stuck in the plumbing, it’s going to be very difficult to remove by yourself. You can try dislodging some of the blockage which will open up the line. This works much better if your home has pipes made of plastic. However, in the end you will see that a professional plumber is needed to fix the problem.

Most people run water in their sink when using their garbage disposal. It is a common misconception that running water simultaneously is a good idea, but that is not really the case. The opposite is actually true. The running water can cause the disposal to clog, causing a plumbing problem.

As you have seen, plumbing, while appearing intimidating, is not all that complicated. Once you understand the basic principles, the rest is easy as screw, twist, and flush. All you need are some tools, patience, curiosity, and no fear of manual labor. Use these skills in tandem with the information you learned here, and you will have the job finished in no time.
